    Renegades of Animation: Pat Sullivan

Pat Sullivan became famous worldwide for his creation of Felix the Cat. What most animation histories gloss over is Sullivan’s checkered past and longtime standing as a wildcat renegade. He didn’t follow the rules. And he made damn sure to fully protect his intellectual properties.

    Other Side Of Maleficent

I have been looking forward to Maleficent with equal amounts of anticipation and dread. On one hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, so cold and so pure, and I want desperately to see more of her and her back-story. On the other hand, she is easily my favorite Disney villain, and I would hate to see her parodied, taken lightly or ultimately destroyed in a film that does not understand this great character. The good news is that this film almost gets it right; but that is also the bad news.

The follow up to Disney’s 2013 Academy Award Winning short Paperman has been announced, and it will premiere at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Laguna College of Art and Design's animation program has instituted a program reaching out to Warren High School in Downey, California, enabling talented students from both institutions to collaborate on real-world experiences in the animation industry.

Following a recruitment presentation in February to eager Warren High students by LCAD animation program chair David Kuhn and professor David Pruiksma, about 50 of those students visited the LCAD campus to view Chris Sander's Original Art show, exhibiting exclusively in the LCAD gallery. As a result of connection and discussion between Kuhn and the students' instructor, Bill Austin, the college is now hosting 10 select students who have apprenticed by assisting college seniors to create films for their year-end projects and portfolios. Over three weekly sessions, the high school students watch the films in progress, and then are given tasks to assist with which include animating, rough in-betweening or clean-up and coloring.

The program provides an opportunity for younger students interested in animation to earn practical experience working on high-quality, fully animated films. The teaching experience reciprocally allows the opportunity for LCAD seniors to hone their communication skills and develop teaching techniques.

"The first meeting with the High School students was so successful that our seniors told us the helpers all exceeded expectations, and they can't wait for further interaction," remarked LCAD professor David Pruiksma. "It's great to see something like this take off, and we hope to continue this program next year with other high schools as well."

The culmination of the program will result in the Laguna Animation Film Festiva, lto be held May 12 at South Coast Cinema in Laguna Beach, California, where the student films will debut for the public and industry professionals. There, the high school students will be able to see the films they worked on and their names up in the credits up on the big screen.

LCAD animation graduates have gone on to work for animation giants that include Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon and Fox Television.

Founded on classical drawing skills, Laguna College of Art and Design (www.lcad.edu) is a private, nonprofit institution founded in 1961, providing year-round exhibitions. LCAD educates artists at all stages of their creative careers, offering Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Drawing and Painting, Graphic Design, Illustration, Game Art and Animation, and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Painting and Drawing.
