Here is what is wrong about these dvds warner bros(greedy brothers) have put out:
They have decided to make each disc (on most discs & most golden collection volumes) have the same character over and over which gets right on your funbags after a while. The looney tunes unique selling point has always been that each episode is followed by a different character. This stops you getting bored of watching the same character over and over again, which makes the characters stay fresh and interesting. i have NEVER watched looney tunes on tv where the same charcter is repeated, have you? no thought not, and when you do like the greedy brothers have forced you to here, if you wanna watch dvd quality looney tunes which we all do, it becomes apparent very quickly that repeating the same charcter over and over is a very sick joke. Changing the character regularly increases the humour factor of the looney toons because the variety keeps you interested, but again this is only upheld if the quality of the episodes stays high resulting in the giggles staying high.
Which leads to the second unbelievable thing about these so called 'golden collections,' the quality of the episodes. Most looney fans know there was a golden period of looney toons production, which is debatable of course, but it all comes down to the creativity inside the episode which gets you laughing. Many episodes lacked that quick-punch, creative-joke, machine-like quality that the best episodes always have. Now, on the golden collection at least half the episodes are simply not good enough. Either the story is a bit lame, the creativity is not sharp enough, the jokes are not snappy enough and come too slowly, the charcter doesnt have the right attitude like when bugs is in his cheeky/arrogant mood is when he is at his best, or the humour is not up to scratch. And theres blummin tonnes of these sub-standard episodes, it sucks! The gems are few and far between and its such a shame. Warner bros had the chance to digitize the very best episodes they had in the vault and condense it into about 2-rib-crackingly funny volumes(so a total of 8 discs in my estimation) with no filler episodes whatsoever. so what do they do? they stretch it out to about 18 volumes like some are predicting with 16 volumes of boring, not funny episodes. Now some romantics fans will say, ah well, its nice to see all the episodes even if you dont laugh once and are totally bored after 2 mins of watching it. sorry, for me that just aint good enough.
anyway, whats the solution? well, first don't this buy this crap. second, do what i did and round up a few vhs videos from the various different series that have been put out over the years such as "golden age of" or "looney tunes video show" or "looney tunes bumper collection which is UK only I think. third, burn them onto a dvd recorder and clean them up with a program like audacity. I have purchased vol 3 & 4 of the golden age, vol 10/11/14/15 of video show and a variety of the bumper collection from amazon.co.uk and all of them have had the top of the bill episodes on them. The sharp, creative, well-scripted and awesome episodes only, compiled in the only way looney tunes should be with a different charcter after each episode, and each episode is top notch. And do you know why? Its because when these videos were put out back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, the world had not totally been taken over by evil, and hadnt totally gone down the toilet just yet. America, with the rest of the world following behind more recently has been taken over by evil, nasty, greedy, a-holes who control all the best things in the world and are sucking the life out of every good thing they can. Looney tunes are one of the best creations this world has ever devised and look what they have done to it. And yet still, there are 250 brain dead sheep who have voted this product favourably. Where did do you sheep people come from? We gotta take the power back! as a great band called rage once said. rant is now complete.
Rating: - Looney Toons vol. 1
Like I said in a earlier review Love me some bugs and daffy on saturdays as opposed to that new stuff they have on TV now. Guess I'm getting to old, but not for bugs and daffy.
Rating: - The best of what is so far five very good sets
At the time I am writing this something short of 400 people have already put their two cents in, so I won't bore you with the details yet again. Let me just say that having viewed all five sets, this one is the best and is the one to start with if you don't know if you'll want to buy the others. It has the very best of the Looney Tune cartoons on it, concentrated in the peak years of 1948-1953. Bugs is featured in over a third of the cartoons, and there is little from the very early cartoons. Do note that "One Froggy Evening" is not in this set, neither is "I Love to Singa". This set has the best extra features, with complete documentary histories of the Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes lines of cartoons. I guess when WHV was putting this set together in 2003 they weren't sure if the idea would go over, so they really knocked themselves out putting out an extra good set, even for WHV's usually high standards.
One feature that this set has that later ones do not is a feature that, as you select each cartoon title, displays a descriptive frame from the cartoon. Since most people remember WB cartoons by content rather than by name, this is most helpful.
Rating: - Good cartoons
I bought this for my grandaughter so I'd have something I could stand to watch with her and I wasn't disapointed. Its great! Worth every penny.
Rating: - A good collection of Looney Tunes.
I love these collections. I enjoy watching them with my children (8 and 11). They are timeless. The collections tend to have several classics and a few filler features. I would like to get one comprehensive collection, rather than many piecemeal collections.
